Sweet, fruity, even slightly sour. There’s nothing that quite matches the taste and aroma of the vibrant red strawberry. Locally, we have plentiful fields of the humble fruits. You can brave the heat, and ticks, to go pick them yourself. If you’d rather not do the picking work yourself, you’re in luck because we now have Martin strawberries available. Can we say officially that summer has arrived?

Beckie, our Carriage House Bakery & Deli Manger, and daughter Payton, spent an overcast morning in the fields looking for just the right Martin strawberries. You see, this seasonal favorite is playing a starring role in this week’s Pre-Order Menu. Along with other local ingredients, you’ll find strawberries included in the local features on our deli shelves:

• Strawberry Scones
• Red, White and Blue Parfaits
• Strawberry-filled Macaroons

Word is the berries have ripened quickly because of the heat. But the lack of rain doesn’t bode well for the green berries that haven’t ripened yet. You’re best bet is to get the berries now while they are available because no one can predict how much longer they’ll be around.
